We’re excited to share that the International Judo Federation (IJF) has just released Journey to the Great Shiai, an educational Minecraft experience designed to teach judo values in a fun and immersive way. schools.ijf.org
What is it?
-
Players explore a mysterious island, solve puzzles, complete parcours, and meet eight Judo Masters.
-
Along the way, you collect cards and use them in digital “tatami” battles, learning classic judo techniques like O-uchi-gari, O-goshi, Uchi-mata, and more.
-
Through the journey, you’ll also learn and reinforce the eight core values of judo: Courage, Respect, Honesty, Self-control, Courtesy, Friendship, Honour, and Modesty.
Why this matters
The IJF believes strongly in developing not just athletes, but whole individuals — teaching values that carry off the mat as much as on it. Minecraft offers a creative, accessible platform to bring this to life, especially for younger students.
This is not the first time IJF has used Minecraft for values-based education: earlier worlds like Mystery of the Kodokan and Mystery of the Budokan have been downloaded millions of times.
How to access & play
-
The map is free to download for anyone who owns Minecraft (Bedrock Edition) or via Minecraft Education Edition for schools.
-
Instructions and a guide file are available with the download link.
-
No additional cost beyond owning Minecraft — the learning world is provided freely.
What it offers our club & students
-
A fun, engaging way to reinforce judo values outside class
-
A tool for youth engagement — many kids already enjoy Minecraft
-
A bridge between educational and sporting realms
-
Possibilities for club-wide challenges or tournaments using the world
We plan to integrate this into our training cycles and youth programs. Stay tuned for announcements about club-wide play sessions or challenge events!
