Grading Commission Policy Update
Following a review of the current grading system, the Grading Commission has approved a number of changes to the grading requirements. These changes are intended to ensure greater consistency in the awarding of grading wins and points and will apply as outlined below.
2nd and 3rd Kyu
Effective immediately:
- All candidates must attend the National Gradings to obtain their two required wins.
- The theory component may still be completed in advance of the National Grading with an appointed Senior Grader.
- Exceptions will only be considered for players who achieve qualifying wins at recognised international events. In such cases, the relevant pool sheet must be submitted to the Grading Commissioner for consideration. All international wins are subject to approval by the Grading Commission.
1st Kyu
The following events are the only competitions in Ireland at which 1st Kyu and Dan grades may earn grading points:
- All Irelands
- Northern Ireland Open
- Irish Open Veterans
- Galway Open
The following events may also be approved as grading events, subject to sufficient entry numbers and prior approval by the Grading Commission:
- Leinster Open
- Munster Open
- West of Ireland Open
- Intervarsities
Judoka may also continue to earn grading points at recognised international events in the United Kingdom and other approved international competitions.
Under 16 Competitors
The Grading Commission has reviewed its previous decision regarding Under 16 competitors and has agreed that judoka aged 14 and 15 may once again participate in the National Gradings.
Wherever possible, these competitors will be matched only against Under 18 judoka.
