Re: Wins for 3rd Kyu and 2nd Kyu

Some time ago the Grading Commission approved the recommendation that 3rd and 2nd Kyu could get the two wins necessary for promotion to next grade by winning in major competitions as well as national gradings. These wins, whether by ippon, Wazari, Hansoku Make etc will only count as long as they were against opponents of same or higher grades (12th Mon is the highest Mon grade in the IJA syllabus and transfers to 3rd Kyu when judoka has reached 14 years).

The Grading Commission goes through the results sheets after relevant competitions and note which judoka have qualified for wins, this is why coaches should make sure their judokas are entered with their proper grade. However, that does not mean instant promotion, theory has to be passed at either the next national grading or by submitting a video at least two weeks in advance of the national grading to the Grading Commission.

This will give time to the judoka to submit a video again in the event of the theory not being good enough and have to be redone. Videos should be of good quality and performed on a proper judo mat with an appropriate partner. As the Chair of the Grading Commission, please note this is a voluntary service and videos can be sent to: harry.mcguigan@irishjudoassociation.ie

Please note that this is only to save judoka that have their two wins the time of travelling to Dublin just to do their theory especially from long distances. Candidates still have to register online for the national grading and pay their grading fee to have their video theory approved. If everything is in order i.e., two wins and theory completed, they will be entered on the IJA national data base with their new grades after the national grading.

Please note that judoka who have two wins and theory completed cannot enter the national grading as the next grade, this is because they are not promoted to that grade until after the current national grading at the time of application.
