Does running take on a whole new urgency when your gut calls? Are gut issues affecting the length of your golf game? Has cycling, swimming, the gym, even walking become more difficult/daunting because of unpredictable gut symptoms? Approximately half a million people in Ireland are living with digestive problems.
Particularly designed for women participating in sport or interested in becoming more active, this event will explore the key elements of gut health, living with common, challenging conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease. It will offer practical solutions that will enable listeners to manage digestive symptoms whilst continuing to enjoy the sport they love.
● An understanding of common but often overlooked/dismissed gut conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
● Learn how and when to seek clinical advice
● Discover potential triggers of gut symptoms e.g. stress, food, alcohol, hormones and what can be done
● Realise the benefits of exercise for the gut
● Diet tips including pre and post sport/physical activity
● Practical and holistic solutions that will enable listeners to manage digestive symptoms and support active lifestyles
About The Gut Experts
The Gut Experts are Professor of Gastroenterology, Barbara Ryan and Clinical Dietitian, Elaine McGowan. Together they are sharing their medical and dietary expertise to educate and empower women to take action to restore their gut health and to find the best solutions for their gut problems. Between them they have cared for more than 60,000 patients and they have a deep appreciation of the challenges and frustrations experienced by many
patients living with digestive conditions.
Professor Barbara Ryan, MD, BAO, BCh, MSc, FRCPI.
Professor Barbara Ryan is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Tallaght University Hospital and the Hermitage Medical Clinic, Dublin and a Clinical Professor of Gastroenterology with
Trinity College, Dublin. Barbara played golf at Junior International level and is now a regular on her club’s teams. She was also a competitive swimmer at junior level. She enjoys keeping fit and feels that this is very important for overall and gut health for people of all ages.
Elaine McGowan RD.
Elaine McGowan is a leading private healthcare Registered Dietician and Clinical Nutritionist with over 30 years experience. She is based primarily at the Hermitage Medical Clinic and also at the Beacon Consultants Clinic, Dublin and Bons Secours Hospital Limerick. Elaine has extensive experience in sports nutrition and has a Masters in Sport Nutrition. She has previously worked with the Olympic Council of Ireland, the Irish Rugby Team and the National Training and Coaching Centre. Elaine has vast experience working with athletes and sports people from recreational and school level, to club and international standard.
